According to **Josh Bakan of Patch**, globally renowned heart surgeon **Dr. Joseph Bavaria** has joined the medical team at **Virtua Health** in South Jersey. Virtua announced that Bavaria, who is internationally recognized for treating complex conditions of the heart and lungs, will serve as **executive director of the Virtua MidAtlantic Cardiovascular Institute** and **chair of cardiac surgery for Virtua Medical Group**.
Before joining Virtua, Bavaria spent decades at **Penn Medicine**, where he built a reputation as a leader in **aortic surgery**, **aortic valve repair**, and other advanced heart procedures. He has also been known for helping develop and refine surgical techniques and for training future heart surgeons. His appointment is part of Virtua’s effort to strengthen and expand its cardiovascular care across the region.
Virtua officials said Bavaria’s arrival will help the health system grow its heart and vascular programs and increase access to highly specialized care for patients in South Jersey. The health system described the move as a significant step in advancing treatment options for complex cardiovascular cases closer to home.
Bavaria said he was drawn to Virtua by the opportunity to build an elite heart surgery program and serve patients throughout the region. Virtua leaders also said his expertise and international reputation will support the organization’s long-term vision for top-level cardiovascular care.
