Despite the Dragway Wildfire in Wharton State Forest being contained as of August 23, remnants of smoke persist in the air. The impact is most notable in towns including Berlin, Evesham, Medford, Medford Lakes, Shamong, Voorhees, and Waterford.
The prolonged presence of smoke is attributed to the fire burning into the duff layer of soil, a common occurrence in summer fires. Additionally, higher humidity during the evening and overnight hours is causing the smoke to hover close to the ground.
Officials anticipate that the smoke will persist until substantial rainfall occurs over the fire area.
The Dragway Wildfire initially erupted near Jackson Road and the former Atco Dragway in Wharton State Forest on August 20. Although it was declared 100 percent contained on August 23 and poses no threat to homes or structures, forest fire service teams remain at the scene to enhance containment lines, address hotspots along the fire perimeter, and monitor the area.
Motorists passing through the region are advised to watch for firefighters and fire vehicles working along the roadsides.
Residents with respiratory conditions are advised to keep their windows closed and limit outdoor activities due to the lingering smoke.
