Cherry Hill welcomes Radin’s Delicatessen, a fresh culinary venture by the Cowan family, renowned for their extensive experience in operating Jewish delis for over a century. This much-anticipated establishment has set up shop in the Short Hills Shopping Center, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the family that previously owned the iconic Famous 4th Street Deli in Philadelphia.

Operational from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at 486 E Evesham Rd, Radin’s Delicatessen is the brainchild of Russ Cowan, a South Jersey resident. Having acquired Famous 4th Street Deli in 2005, Cowan transformed it into a regional sensation, attracting large crowds, national acclaim, and visits from numerous celebrities.

As Radin’s Delicatessen makes its debut, it brings with it a familiar menu featuring “overstuffed” sandwiches, an array of Reubens, classic matzoh ball soup, and an enticing selection of cakes and baked goods. The restaurant aims to capture the essence of the family’s culinary legacy, offering patrons a taste of traditional Jewish deli delights.

The Cowan family’s journey in the deli business traces back to the early 20th century when eight Radin siblings immigrated from Russia to New York City. Five of them went on to establish Jewish delis in Brooklyn and Manhattan, laying the foundation for a rich culinary tradition.

Russ Cowan, a fourth-generation restaurateur, brings a wealth of experience to Radin’s Delicatessen. In the 1970s and 80s, he founded Bagel Nosh, a bakery and deli chain spanning from Miami to the Midwest. Subsequently, he worked with Vienna Beef, a renowned Chicago meat producer. In 1989, Cowan and his family moved to South Jersey, where they ventured into developing multiple successful delicatessens.

Radin’s Delicatessen takes the place of Short Hills Deli, which had been a staple in the shopping center for 25 years before closing its doors in late 2021.

While Famous 4th Street Deli transitions to new ownership under the Local 8 Hospitality Group, Radin’s Delicatessen is poised to carry forward the Cowan family’s culinary legacy, promising an experience that honors tradition while offering a fresh take on classic deli fare.
