An NYPD officer has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a man during a road-rage incident in Voorhees, Camden County, authorities said.
The incident occurred last month when Hieu Tran, an NYPD officer, reportedly used his department-issued firearm to shoot the victim. According to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office (CCPO), the victim was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he remains in critical and unstable condition.
Tran, 27, was charged on Thursday with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was arrested by the NYPD the same day in New York.
Following the incident, the NYPD suspended Tran without pay, according to a department spokesperson.
Voorhees police responded to a crash at the intersection of Route 73 and Cooper Road just before 11:15 p.m. on May 17. Upon arrival, officers discovered one of the drivers suffering from a gunshot wound, the CCPO reported.
Tran, a resident of Yonkers, New York, was identified as the shooter through surveillance footage, cell phone records, and ballistics evidence, authorities said.
Surveillance footage revealed that the victim’s truck had stopped at the intersection when a white SUV, later identified as Tran’s vehicle, approached. The victim then moved his truck next to Tran’s SUV. Moments later, the victim accelerated through the red light, hitting several vehicles and causing “serious” injury. The white SUV then sped through the red light and fled the scene.
It remains unclear when Tran fired his weapon during the sequence. A CCPO spokesperson declined to provide further details on the case.
At the scene, police found the victim’s yellow truck with bullet strikes and the victim suffering from gunshot wounds nearby. Officers recovered three 9mm casings, which detectives later matched to Tran’s service weapon.
Tran has waived extradition and will be transported to Camden County, according to CCPO Sgt. Andrew McNeil. A detention hearing will be scheduled once Tran is extradited.
Tran has been an NYPD officer since early 2021. Last year, he earned a base salary of $53,600 and nearly $11,000 in overtime, according to public records.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact CCPO Det. Cody Skinner at 856-580-6053 or Det. John Loberto of the Voorhees Township Police Department at 856-428-5400.
