As the weather warms up and the sun shines brighter, it’s time to gear up for another exciting boating season in New Jersey. But before you hit the water, make sure you’re up to speed on the state’s boating requirements.

In New Jersey, operating a powered vessel comes with certain responsibilities. To ensure safe boating practices, the New Jersey State Police requires all boaters to complete a state-approved boating safety course and pass a proctored exam.

Fortunately, getting certified is easy. You can choose between attending a classroom course, which includes the exam, or taking an online course through approved providers like AceBoater.com, BoaterExam.com, or Boat-Ed.com. If you opt for the online course, you can join Boat Safe US for the proctored exam.

Wondering about age requirements? Children as young as 12 can take the course, but they must wait until age 13 to receive their certificate. Different age thresholds apply depending on the type of vessel, with operators of power vessels needing to be at least sixteen years old, including out-of-state residents.

Additionally, if you plan to boat on non-tidal waters, you’ll need a non-tidal boat license in addition to your safety certificate. Remember, this license is separate from your safety certificate and is required for operation on non-tidal waters in the state. To obtain your boat license, visit your nearest NJ Division of Motor Vehicle Commission Facility with your safety certificate and apply for the endorsement on your NJ driver’s license.

Once you’ve completed the course and passed the exam with a score of 80 or better, you’ll receive a temporary boating safety certificate. Your official NJSP-issued card and NASBLA card will arrive in the mail a few weeks later. These cards may be required when operating a vessel outside of New Jersey, so be sure to keep them handy.

For those who prefer to study ahead, the NJ State Police has provided a comprehensive Boat Safety Manual available online. Access it at www.nj.gov/njsp/info/pdf/marin
