Sometimes, all you need is a quick escape, a brief respite from the everyday hustle and bustle. Nestled in the picturesque Pocono Mountains, the historic town of Jim Thorpe, PA, offers just that – a delightful retreat that’s easily accessible from Southern New Jersey. Known as “The Switzerland of America,” Jim Thorpe beckons with its quaint charm, outdoor adventures, and delectable dining options.
Embark on a scenic two-hour drive from South Jersey, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of Jim Thorpe, ready to explore its treasures. Our recent getaway led us to the Y on Broadway, a boutique hotel housed in a meticulously restored 1890s YMCA building. The Y’s blend of historic elegance and modern comforts, including retro-styled amenities and an on-site spa, made for an unforgettable stay. With plans underway for a lobby bar, the Y promises even more delights for future guests.
Despite our short visit, we managed to pack quite a bit into our 24 hours in the Poconos. A short drive to nearby Lackawanna County brought us to Old Forge, affectionately known as the “Pizza Capital of the World.” At Arcaro & Gennell, a local institution since the 1960s, we indulged in Old Forge Pizza – a regional specialty that’s as unique as it is delicious.
Back in Jim Thorpe, we whiled away the afternoon exploring the town’s charming shops and cultural attractions. Bee Stung, a whimsical boutique offering handmade jewelry, caught our eye, as did Soundcheck Records, a haven for music lovers of all stripes. A visit to the Mauch Chunk Opera House and a leisurely stop at the Notch Eight Craft House rounded out our day, offering a taste of the town’s vibrant arts and entertainment scene.
Before bidding farewell to Jim Thorpe, we savored a hearty breakfast at the Y and made one last stop at the Carbon County Environmental Center. Amidst the tranquil surroundings, we marveled at majestic birds of prey and reveled in the beauty of nature.
Our brief escape to Jim Thorpe left us longing for more, a sentiment echoed by many who have experienced the town’s timeless allure. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventures, cultural enrichment, or simply a chance to unwind, Jim Thorpe offers the perfect backdrop for your next getaway.
