In a bittersweet turn of events, The Mexican Food Factory in Evesham, Burlington County, is set to permanently close its doors on December 30, marking the end of a remarkable 40-year journey in the culinary landscape. The family-owned restaurant has been a beloved fixture in the community since its establishment in 1979.
While the closure brings a sense of nostalgia and farewell to patrons who have cherished the restaurant’s offerings over the decades, a new chapter is about to unfold at 601 Route 70 W—the current location of The Mexican Food Factory. Sativa Wellness, LLC, a prospective cannabis business, has acquired necessary approvals to transform the space into a cannabis dispensary.
The transition from a longstanding Mexican eatery to a cannabis dispensary was first confirmed on June 29, when The Mexican Food Factory announced the prospective sale. At that time, the restaurant continued its operations until further notice. Sativa Wellness, LLC has since secured licensure to operate a cannabis retailer in New Jersey and gained approval from the Township Council to proceed with its plans.
Before officially opening its doors, Sativa Wellness is required to submit its application to the Township Planning Board and secure approval from the governing body. The council’s resolution, passed on June 28, expressed support for the dispensary at 601 Route 70, citing that Sativa Wellness has met essential conditions and selected a location compliant with township zoning regulations.
The support from the governing body is contingent upon the Planning Board approving the conditional-use application. Evesham allows up to five cannabis retailers, and with the recent opening of Highway 90, the first dispensary in the area, the landscape is evolving to accommodate the growing demand.
As the Mexican Food Factory prepares for its final farewell, the forthcoming cannabis dispensary represents a new era in the local business scene. Sativa Wellness joins a growing number of cannabis retailers in Burlington County, contributing to New Jersey’s expanding network of 79 dispensaries offering recreational and/or medical cannabis.
While change is inevitable, the memories created at The Mexican Food Factory will linger in the hearts of the community. The transition to a cannabis dispensary highlights the dynamic nature of business landscapes, reflecting the evolving needs and preferences of the community.
