The race for Cherry Hill Township Council is heating up, with four candidates throwing their hats into the ring for two council seats up for grabs this year.
With two Democrats and two Republicans vying for the positions, the stage is set for an interesting contest.

While the field of candidates has been established, the process is not yet complete. Petitions must undergo certification, and adjustments can still be made in the coming days. Additionally, objections to the petitions can be raised until April 1, per New Jersey regulations. Independent candidates also have until June 4 to submit petitions for candidacy in the general election, which coincides with the state’s primary election day.
This year’s council elections deviate from the norm, as both council seats were vacated by officeholders who did not complete their terms. Dave Fleisher, who was elected mayor in November and subsequently resigned to assume his mayoral duties, left one of the vacant seats. Brian Bauerle, then a council member, was appointed as Fleisher’s chief of staff, leaving his council term unfinished.
Following these changes, the council appointed Daniel V. DiRenzo, Jr. to fill Bauerle’s seat and retained Jill Hulnick to complete Fleisher’s term. Notably, Bauerle’s term was scheduled to end in 2027, while Fleisher’s term extended until 2025.
As per state regulations, the appointments of DiRenzo and Hulnick are temporary, expiring at the end of this year. In November, Cherry Hill voters will have the opportunity to elect individuals to serve the remainder of these council terms.
Currently, Democrats hold the mayorship and all Township Council seats in Cherry Hill, setting the stage for an intriguing electoral contest as the community prepares to choose its representatives. Stay tuned for updates as the election season progresses.
