This event, now in its 22nd year, will involve participation from various local entities, including the Cherry Hill Fire Department, the Cherry Hill Board of Fire Commissioners, and the Cherry Hill Police Department. Mayor Shin Angulo and members of the local council will also join to pay tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Cherry Hill Fire Department Headquarters located at 1100 Marlkress Road and will commence at 8:30 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to assemble near the September 11 memorial prior to the commencement of the ceremony.
The tragic events of September 11, 2001, resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 American lives, including one individual from Cherry Hill. In the subsequent war on terror, five Cherry Hill service members made the ultimate sacrifice:
- Marine Jonathan G. Cohen, who lost his life on October 1, 2005.
- Gregory T. Dalessio, a member of the U.S. Army, who was killed on June 23, 2008.
- Marine Jeremy M. Kane, who passed away on January 23, 2010.
- Kenneth A. Smith, a member of the U.S. Navy, who gave his life on August 21, 2017.
- Marine John C. Spahr, who was killed on May 2, 2005.
The impact of the September 11 attacks was profound, with over 2,700 individuals losing their lives at the World Trade Center alone. This included passengers aboard American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175. Additionally, 184 lives were tragically lost when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into The Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and another 44 individuals perished on United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
