In a recent development, a state grand jury has determined that a Cherry Hill police officer, Officer Jared Fox, was not responsible for the death of a man during an encounter in October 2022. Consequently, no charges will be filed against Officer Fox for his involvement in the incident.
The tragic situation unfolded when township police responded to a well-being check at Joseph Bestic, Jr.’s residence on Chapel Avenue West. The police received a call from a concerned individual, prompting the welfare check, according to details from a state investigation. Upon allowing the officers to enter his home, Bestic produced a firearm and, regrettably, shot himself, according to authorities.
During this distressing moment, Officer Fox also discharged his service weapon once, as reported by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General (OAG). Fortunately, the bullet only grazed Bestic’s right arm, causing a superficial injury. However, tragically, Bestic, aged 63, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The state’s grand jury, after careful consideration, concluded on October 23 that Officer Fox’s actions did not result in Bestic’s death.
It’s important to note that state law mandates the OAG to investigate all fatalities that occur during interactions with law enforcement or while the deceased person is in custody. Following the investigation, the OAG’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability must present its findings to a grand jury.
The thorough investigation into Bestic’s tragic passing involved various aspects, including witness interviews, examination of photographs, review of video footage, and a comprehensive analysis of the medical examiner’s autopsy findings, according to statements by the OAG.
