Cherry Hill Mayor Dave Fleisher, who has been critical of the state’s handling of the Route 70 reconstruction project, expressed hope after a recent meeting with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT). Despite the optimism, Fleisher emphasizes the need for better communication from the state agency regarding construction and traffic updates.

Throughout the ongoing reconstruction of Route 70, concerns have been raised by residents and business owners who feel inadequately informed about the project’s progress. The multi-year initiative involves lane closures and traffic pattern shifts, impacting local business districts and neighborhoods in Cherry Hill.

Following the public expression of these concerns, Mayor Fleisher and Cherry Hill officials engaged in discussions with NJDOT. While describing the meeting as productive and a step in the right direction, Fleisher acknowledges that much work remains to address the communication gaps.

“I emphasized the need for more, and better, communication from the Department (NJDOT) for our residents, neighborhoods, and local businesses,” Fleisher stated. “We eagerly await greater communication from the Department to help our residents and small businesses navigate this project. I will continue to be a vocal advocate for Cherry Hill.”

NJDOT spokesperson Leanna Nelson affirmed the agency’s commitment to addressing concerns and maintaining close contact with Cherry Hill officials. “NJDOT is always willing to meet with local officials to discuss any potential impacts that may be caused by a project, both before and after the impacts occur,” Nelson added.

The Route 70 project, funded by the state at $153 million, involves the reconstruction of nearly 9 miles of Route 70 between Route 38 in Pennsauken and Cooper Avenue in Evesham, with a significant portion passing through Cherry Hill. Commencing in September 2021, the construction is anticipated to conclude in early 2027.

To stay informed about Route 70 construction updates, residents can visit the project’s webpage and follow NJDOT on Facebook and Twitter. NJDOT issues construction notices and traffic advisories, sharing them with local officials in affected municipalities. Due to potential changes in timing caused by weather and other factors, NJDOT encourages drivers to check the 511nj.org website for real-time updates and travel information.
