Camden, New Jersey, recently hosted its 2023 Annual Meeting, a gathering that brought together civic and business leaders from across the southern New Jersey region. Held at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, the event celebrated and showcased the many programs, projects, and policies that are shaping the economic and community landscape of the city.
The theme for this year’s annual meeting was “Camden: Resilient and Invincible.” It highlighted the collaborative efforts of government at the state, regional, and local levels, as well as economic and business leaders, to drive positive change and growth in areas such as economic development, education, quality of life, safety, and community development.
In his address, Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the significance of Camden as an economic driver for both South Jersey and the entire state. He highlighted the state’s investments in South Jersey’s economic development and infrastructure, including the transformative Walter Rand Transportation Center Project. These investments reflect the commitment to Camden’s ongoing revitalization and its journey toward a more resilient and prosperous future.
Dana L. Redd, President and CEO of Camden Community Partnership, stressed the critical role played by dynamic partnerships in strengthening Camden’s resiliency. She emphasized that collaboration and targeted investments are driving creative and transformative progress in the city, ensuring sustained growth not only for Camden but also for the entire region.
Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen of Camden addressed the initiatives that the city and its partners have undertaken to contribute to its continued progress. He underscored the importance of working together, especially at a time when Camden stands on the cusp of significant opportunities and a promising future.
The event also featured a special award ceremony, led by Lara Price, Chief Operating Officer of the Philadelphia 76ers and Vice Chair of Camden Community Partnership’s Board of Directors. The Camden Hero Award was presented to Sheila Roberts, a lifelong Camden resident known for her dedication to the Cooper Plaza neighborhood and her advocacy for the city. Roberts has been involved in various community activities, from organizing food distributions to supporting local youth sports groups.
The Camden Small Business of the Year Award was given to La Ingrata Camden, a Mexican restaurant founded by Karla Torres and Ernesto Ventura. Their family-owned business has quickly become a culinary gem in Camden, offering diners a taste of Mexico City and Puebla. La Ingrata Camden has received acclaim for its delicious cuisine and community involvement, reflecting the spirit of entrepreneurship and commitment to the city.
