Matteo Lucchi, a rising freshman at Cherry Hill High School East, achieved a significant accomplishment this summer by earning a merit scholarship to attend the renowned Philadelphia International Music Camp and Festival. The 14-year-old violinist from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was honored with the Alice Downs Scholarship for Young Violinists. This prestigious award enabled Matteo to participate in an intensive classical music training program hosted by the camp on the grounds of the Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, PA.
Reflecting on his experience, Matteo exclaimed, “I’ve been to music camp before, but nothing like this!” He delved into a comprehensive curriculum that included orchestra rehearsals, sightreading sessions, practice routines, performances, master classes, and chamber music exercises. Matteo particularly appreciated the chamber ensembles’ work, where intricate music is performed without a conductor. He noted that this experience significantly improved his musicianship, especially in terms of rhythmic precision. “Before I came to PIMF, I wasn’t super strong in counting and rhythms. It’s MUCH better now. Everyone I worked with was really nice and helpful,” he shared.
Matteo was among over 200 instrumental music students aged 8 to 19 from around the world who attended the camp, drawn by the opportunity to learn directly from members of the illustrious Philadelphia Orchestra. The event provided a unique platform for young classical musicians to refine their skills, interact with peers, and engage in cultural exchange. Participants hailed from various corners of the globe, including countries like New Zealand, Costa Rica, Greece, Norway, Trinidad, Taiwan, Vietnam, and France.
The Alice Downs Scholarship, dedicated to the memory of Valma Lock Hunter, was established by David Hunter, Publisher at Haddonfield media company The Gumnut Group, LLC, in honor of his mother. This scholarship exclusively benefits promising violin and viola students residing in Camden, Gloucester, or Burlington County in New Jersey.
The Philadelphia International Music Festival (PIMF), directed by Kimberly Fisher, Principal Second Violin of The Philadelphia Orchestra, hosts the music camp and festival. PIMF offers a unique opportunity for aspiring musicians worldwide to undergo comprehensive music education and performance training under the guidance of Philadelphia Orchestra members. Beyond the summer camp programs held on the Main Line, PIMF has expanded its reach with year-round training, including online Master Classes taught by principal players of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
Matteo’s achievement exemplifies the potential of young talents and the value of programs like PIMF in nurturing their musical growth. Aspiring musicians continue to receive unparalleled mentorship and training, propelling them towards greater musical heights.
