In a heart-stopping moment along the Delaware River, quick-thinking individuals at a local Irish pub became heroes as they sprang into action to prevent a potential tragedy.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning, prompting a swift response from law enforcement and emergency personnel. At 12:10 a.m., Gloucester City police were dispatched to Freedom Pier following reports of a water rescue. Upon arrival, they encountered several good Samaritans gathered on the south side of the pier, including Mark Lewis, a city resident employed at Holy City Publick House, a nearby bar and restaurant.
It was Lewis and his coworker, Jeannie Yaniak, who first heard the cries for help emanating from the river. Without hesitation, Lewis rushed to the water’s edge, extending a lifeline to the distressed individual struggling in the current. Meanwhile, Yaniak alerted authorities to the unfolding emergency.
Officers James Burkhardt and Michael Becker of the Gloucester City Police Department swiftly moved into position to assist, ensuring the victim’s safety while keeping his head above water. Officer Sean Gartland provided vital support, preventing any accidental slips or falls during the rescue operation. With the assistance of firefighters Chris Ryan and Thomas Quinn III, who courageously entered the water to secure the man, the situation was brought under control until additional help arrived.
Marine 5, a local watercraft, played a crucial role in transporting the victim to safety at the Gloucester City Marina, where emergency medical services personnel were on standby to provide immediate treatment. Thanks to the collective efforts of these brave individuals, the victim was swiftly transported to the hospital for further care.
Gloucester City Police Chief Brian Morrell commended the exemplary actions of the officers, firefighters, and civilians involved in the rescue operation, highlighting their unwavering dedication to serving and protecting the community. Their selfless acts of heroism serve as a testament to the importance of remaining vigilant and ready to lend a helping hand in times of need.
