The Cherry Hill School District has welcomed a new superintendent, Dr. Kwame Morton, following the Board of Education’s approval at Tuesday’s meeting. With five members voting in favor, two opposed, and one abstaining, Morton assumes the leadership role in the district.
Dr. Morton, a seasoned administrator, had been serving as the acting superintendent since July, during the district’s extensive nationwide search for its next superintendent.
In addition to Dr. Morton’s appointment, the majority of the board also voted to promote two of Cherry Hill’s principals to key administrative positions within the district. George Guy was appointed as the Director of Elementary Education, while Dr. Neil Burti will serve as the Director of Secondary Education.
However, Board Members Renee Cherfane and Kimberly Gallagher dissented from Morton’s appointment and chose to abstain from voting on Burti and Guy’s promotions.
During the meeting, Gallagher expressed the need for more time to consider the appointments, emphasizing the significant impact such decisions have on the district. She affirmed her support for Dr. Morton, despite her vote against his appointment, stating, “I’ll be rooting for you.”
Board President Miriam Stern, Vice President Joe Mayer, and Board Members Adam Greenbaum, Dr. Benjamin Rood, and Gina Winters voted in favor of Morton’s appointment, while Quadsia Niaz abstained from the vote.
Dr. Morton’s appointment marks the district’s first permanent superintendent since the departure of Dr. Joseph N. Meloche last June. His contract extends through June 2028, providing stability and continuity to the district’s leadership.
Dr. Morton brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in various capacities within the Cherry Hill School District since 2008. Prior to his appointment as acting superintendent, he served as the Assistant Superintendent of PreK-12 Curriculum and Instruction.
Expressing gratitude to the board for their participation in the selection process, Dr. Morton conveyed his deep affection for the Cherry Hill community. “I have a great sense of reverence, love, and affection for this community and its members,” he remarked.
The appointment of Dr. Kwame Morton heralds a new chapter in the Cherry Hill School District’s journey, with a focus on continued excellence and student success under his leadership.
