Cherry Hill Township Council has recently filled two vacant seats with the appointment of Daniel V. DiRenzo, Jr., and Jill Hulnick. The new members step into the positions formerly held by Mayor Dave Fleisher and his Chief of Staff, Brian Bauerle.

Daniel V. DiRenzo, Jr., brings a wealth of experience to the council, having served the Cherry Hill Fire Department for 25 years, rising to the positions of captain and CFO. He has also been actively involved in various local boards and commissions, including the township Zoning Board. In recent years, DiRenzo served as a student support supervisor at Cherry Hill High School West, providing him with valuable insights into social interactions within the community.

Jill Hulnick, an independent consultant with a background in educational administration, joins the council with a focus on community impact. Hulnick has served as the chief impact officer for BBYO, a nonprofit dedicated to serving Jewish teens. Her prior roles include Assistant Deputy Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Education from 2015-18. Hulnick is known for her active involvement in the community, serving on the Jewish Federation’s Planning and Visioning Committee and the Jewish Community Foundation’s Grantmaking Committee.

The appointments of DiRenzo and Hulnick are temporary and will last until November’s elections when voters will decide the individuals who will complete the council terms. Fleisher’s term was originally set to expire at the end of 2025, while Bauerle’s term runs through 2027.

The appointment process adhered to state law, where municipal officeholders appoint successors when elected leaders are unable to complete their terms. Nominations for the vacant seats were submitted by the Cherry Hill Democratic Committee, as both Fleisher and Bauerle were Democrats. The committee put forward three nominees for each seat, with DiRenzo, Ted Kail, and Lorraine Maitland nominated for Fleisher’s seat, and Hulnick, Gerry Greene, and Anna Postiloff contending for Bauerle’s former position.

During the council meeting on Monday, DiRenzo and Hulnick were unanimously appointed by council members. They took their places alongside fellow council members but abstained from voting on agenda items due to limited time for review, following advice from Municipal Attorney Cosmas Diamantis.

With these appointments, Cherry Hill Township Council is back at full occupancy, following the earlier appointments of William Carter, III, as council president and Michele Golkow as vice president on January 2nd, filling the roles previously held by Fleisher and Bauerle.
