In a disturbing incident last month, Charles M. Miller IV, the son of a South Jersey sheriff, crashed his speeding vehicle into a Salem County apartment building, revealing a shocking discovery. Documents obtained by Patch indicate that Miller was intoxicated during the collision and couldn’t recall the incident. The crash report details that his pickup truck was carrying various drugs, including heroin.
The incident occurred at 12:44 a.m. on November 18, when Miller’s vehicle struck a pole and then collided with a multi-family complex on North Broadway in Pennsville, according to township police. Miller faces a range of criminal and motor-vehicle offenses for the crash.
The Salem City resident reportedly had no memory of the incident, according to the crash report. The collision resulted in the displacement of three families living in the building, as reported by the property owners.
Miller’s pickup truck was found to contain 36 bags of suspected heroin, four used bags of suspected heroin wax folds, six vials of suspected crack cocaine, and five Xanax pills, according to the criminal complaint. Additionally, he allegedly kicked an officer during his arrest.
Despite Patch’s request for comment, Miller did not respond.
It’s worth noting that Miller’s father, Sheriff Charles M. Miller of Salem County, clarified that motor-vehicle crashes fall outside his department’s purview, and he has no involvement in the case. The Pennsville Police Department responded to and investigated the scene.
Sheriff Charles M. Miller stated, “I’ve been involved in law enforcement for 44 years and I’ve really prided myself in not getting involved in any law enforcement matter involving family or friends and allowing the police departments to conduct their independent investigations. Upon their conclusion, whatever happens happens. I think that’s the way that most law enforcement officers operate.”
The 32-year-old Charles M. Miller IV faces a litany of criminal charges, including possession of a Schedule 1 substance (suspected heroin and suspected crack cocaine), possessing prescription legend drugs (Xanax), driving under the influence during a crash, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on law enforcement, reckless endangerment, creating a nuisance, and endangering the safety of others. He also received several motor-vehicle summonses, including careless driving and improper use of the left lane.
According to the crash report, Miller crossed into the northbound lane while traveling southbound on North Broadway. His vehicle struck a utility pole, breaking it in half, and then collided with the apartment building.
Due to structural and electrical damage, the residence was quarantined after the crash, resulting in the displacement of three families. In response, Cloud 9 Homes, the Pennsville-based business that owns the properties, initiated a GoFundMe page on November 20 to secure hotel rooms for the affected families.
