The Cherry Hill rivalry high school football game, originally slated for Friday night, has been rescheduled due to “recent events impacting our school community,” according to district officials.
Cherry Hill High School East and West were set to face off in their annual rivalry match, an event that traditionally brings together students, parents, staff, and the entire Cherry Hill community. However, the game has been postponed to October 26 at 6 p.m.
The decision to reschedule came from the district’s athletic director and the principals of both high schools. In an announcement, they expressed their understanding that this change might be disappointing to many but emphasized that it was reached after thorough consideration, with the utmost concern for the current circumstances and the well-being of the entire Cherry Hill community. They greatly appreciate the understanding and support of the community as they navigate these challenging times.
While the officials did not specify the exact nature of the recent events that led to the postponement, several other Cherry Hill events, including a Township Council meeting, were also rescheduled this week in light of the events involving Hamas-led attacks on Israel and the ensuing warfare. Cherry Hill is home to one of New Jersey’s highest Jewish populations.
Authorities have reiterated that there are no known specific threats to Cherry Hill. However, out of an abundance of caution, police presence will be increased at schools, places of worship, and throughout the community.
Law enforcement across the state will continue to monitor sensitive areas, such as houses of worship for the Jewish and Islamic faiths, large gathering places, and schools. Despite the increased vigilance, there have been no specific threats reported in New Jersey, as confirmed by state Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin.
Platkin also expressed solidarity with the Israeli and Jewish communities, acknowledging the loss of innocent lives in the recent terrorist attacks on Israel and offering prayers for all innocent civilians affected by the horrors of war.
The Hamas-led attack on Israel resulted in over 1,300 casualties, while Israeli strikes in response claimed the lives of nearly 1,800 people in Gaza, as reported by CNN on Friday.
